Carmelo Anthony Visits Rikers: Calls For Reform

Carmelo Anthony turns documentary filmmaker in a new special for Vice Sports.

The basketball star went inside infamous Rikers Prison in New York, to interact with inmates and to learn the living conditions and treatment of the prisoners.

‘The dormitory was mind-boggling. It was like a big sleepover. I think they said it’s 32 people in there. It’s no division. So you’re sitting in there, you’re eating in front of everybody, you’re changing your clothes in front of everybody. That s–t is sad,’ he explained in the video.

The NBA player is calling for reform, saying that prison should offer more than just confinement.

‘I know it’s a prison, but prison should be more of a rehab,” he added. “I know people, family members, close friends, that are in there that just came home. And you can see — some of them do better when they come home, some of them are worse off,’ the New York Knicks forward lamented.

Having grown up in the projects in Red Hook, Brooklyn, the trip to the prison was personal for Anthony. It’s one of his many charitable efforts, including restoring basketball courts in Coney Island and the Bronx.

It’s so powerful to see ball players using their platform for good.

Kenya Moore thinks she is the reigning queen of Atlanta since NeNe Leakes was dethroned.

The director of ‘Life Twirls On’ stopped by New York Live to shade her cast members, particularly Kim Fields. 

‘You know, some people are made for reality TV and some people aren’t. I mean, you have to be kind of interesting, right? I don’t [find her interesting],’ she stated.

When asked if Nene’s departure affected the show’s popularity, Moore clapped back explaining, ‘It didn’t. We opened to 3.7 million viewers, so clearly we’re doing just fine without her. Listen, you can’t deny the fact that she is one of the originals, and she helped to build a platform that we have now, but times change. There might just be a new queen as a ruler now.’

Oop, and we wonder who that may be? As if egos and weaves couldn’t get any bigger.
